Ottawa Home and Garden Show Sneak Peak
It has begun! The Ottawa Home and Garden show is underway and some of the booths are up, including the one that I'll be working on :). I hope it goes well! So far so good. Instead of the black curtains that I really don't like, there will be walls. It's an interesting system that just comes together like a puzzle, from a company called Event Design here in Ottawa. You can see their crew installing the walls from my booth below.
They had already completed CDECA's booth when I was there and it should be painted tomorrow as well.

Discovering places with CDECA
I recently joined CDECA's board of directors for the National Capital Region Chapter as the new Program Director. My role is to organize various outings and events for members and guests. This enables us to learn more about the various products available in the national capital region (and other cities) and get together to talk about decorations and design. The first event, which took place last month was at Logs End. After discovering and blogging about them last year, I though it was a perfect occasion to go check them out. It was very interesting. You can find out about that visit on CDECA NRC's new blog here.

The weather has been so nice lately that hot dog stands are already back out downtown... in the middle of March!

PechaKucha Night in Ottawa
Here's another interesting event that's coming to Ottawa : PechaKucha Night. PechaKucha Night was born in Tokyo in 2003. It was created as an event for young designers to meet network, and show their work in public. The presentations are formated in a very interesting way, called PechaKucha 20x20, each presenter shows 20 images for 20 seconds each and talks along to the images. This concept spread internationally all the way to Ottawa earlier this year, where the first PechaKucha night was held. (I wish I had known about it then!) Looks like it was quite successful night.
Fortunately, there will be another one at the end of the month. I'll definitely have to go check it out :). I Here's an example of a very interesting presentation from Gary Chen in Tokyo the evolution of the design of his apartment.

Art Chairs for Charity
I recently found out about a really neat project by IKEA and OCRI: “Pull Up a Chair for Breakfast” Fundraiser Auction. The goal is to improve the ability of children in-need to learn by providing a nutritious breakfast in a safe, supervised environment. According to OCRI, approximately 10,000 children in 145 schools in the city begin each school day with a nutritious meal provided by the School Breakfast Program. The program provides funding for equipment, program monitors and food.
In order to raise money, several IKEA Stephan chairs have been hacked by various people and are currently up for auction until Sunday March 7th. The modified chairs (shown below) are also on display at the entrance of the IKEA Ottawa store until March 7th.
There are some really original ideas but personally the top 3 in terms of originality has to be:
1. Stefan the Man by Pierre I. Brunet, local artist
2. Ode to Mondrian by Charlotte P, Fatima S, Melissa B. and Julia T (students)
3. Calamari by Marlaina D & Kennedy B. (students)
